19 May 2011 Explication of Theodore Roethkes Root Cellar A popular theme of a variety of art and media, purport and death argon often focused on individually. This starts the reader off with the printing that the cellar is not a friendly place; cipher would even sleep there, how could anything live in such a place? Roethke shows the cellar as a wet place, trail the reader of the poem to envision a damp environment in the dark. He goes on to use the imagery of bulbs broke out of boxes (2) and cracks to allude that this place is not in the outperform condition it has constantly been in, and is headed in the opposite direction.
Continuing with the unsettling imagery, Roethke describes shoots that are dangled and drooped/lolling ob eyeshotly from mildewed crates (3 4). done these lines he first creates the contrast of life ag ainst a scene of depravity. The monochrome imagery of brown smear and roots stimulates a splash of yellow and other tropical colors, inspiring signs of life among the previously barren scene.
